Un mio vecchio "cavallo di battaglia". Il soggetto è Cathal Carroll, un attore con una spiccata e naturale vena comica. Ed è proprio questa sua natura a rendere questa fotografia un po' sfuggente. È un'immagine che mi ha sempre provocato uno strano corto circuito visivo, ci vedo ogni volta due fantasmi che non dovrebbero stare nella stessa stanza. Da un lato c'è l'eredità comica e nostalgica di Stan Laurel - la bombetta, la mimica, certa leggerezza del cinema muto - dall'altro uno sguardo e un sorriso, in parte nascosti dalle ombre, che richiamano qualcosa di decisamente più cupo, quasi come l'Alex di Arancia Meccanica. Un equilibrio sottile, non costruito a tavolino ma venuto fuori nel tempo, che rimane ogni volta che la guardo.
One of my old "workhorses" — the subject is Cathal Carroll, an actor with a strong, natural comic streak. And it's precisely that nature that makes this photograph a little elusive. It's an image that has always struck me as a strange visual short circuit: I've always seen two ghosts in it that shouldn't share the same room. On one side, the comic, nostalgic legacy of Stan Laurel: the bowler hat, the mime-like physicality, the lightness, silent film. On the other, a gaze partly hidden by shadow that evokes something far darker, almost like Alex from A Clockwork Orange. A delicate balance, never built deliberately but surfaced over time, that remains every time I look at it again.
