LA STANZA DEL RITRATTO
Spazio 130 è il luogo dove lavoro. Lo chiamiamo così è al numero 130. Semplice.
È uno spazio che conosco in ogni dettaglio, in ogni variazione di luce e per me è un po’ rifugio, ma in realtà è molto di più. È la stanza del ritratto, è dove mi incontro con le persone che fotografo e ogni persona porta una storia che non conosco e che non mi verrà mai raccontata per intero.
Così diventa anche la stanza dell’incontro, del confronto perché ognuno in qualche modo riorganizza quello spazio attorno a sé, anche senza volerlo. Il mondo esterno, da cui a volte mi rifugio, entra così nella mia vita e da questo nasce il lavoro che mi interessa davvero.
Quello che cerco, infatti, non è il ritratto come documento. Mi interessa riuscire a fermare il soggetto quando smette di gestirsi, di trattenersi, di credere di sapere come appare. Non è sempre facile, a volte sembra non succedere, però quando arriva quel momento lo riconosco sempre.
Le mie immagini in studio, scatti fatti nel tempo e con persone diverse, con storie e situazioni diverse, sono legate assieme da quegli attimi di incontro, di sospensione, in cui di solito basta scattare.
Quello spazio, la stanza del ritratto, è per me un luogo di bellezza e di possibilità. E proprio perché le possibilità sono tante, e si rinnovano ogni volta, mi piace tornarci spesso. Dopo tutto questo tempo, grazie a tutti questi incontri, è ancora il posto dove voglio stare.
THE PORTRAIT ROOM
Spazio 130 is where I work. We call it that because it's at number 130. Simple.
It's a space I know in every detail, in every variation of light, and for me it's something of a refuge — but in reality it's much more than that. It's the portrait room, the place where I meet the people I photograph, and every person brings a story I don't know and that will never be told to me in full.
So it also becomes the room of encounter, of exchange, because everyone somehow reorganizes that space around themselves, even without meaning to. The outside world, from which I sometimes take refuge, enters my life this way, and from this comes the work that truly interests me.
What I look for is not the portrait as document. What interests me is catching the subject at the moment they stop managing themselves, holding back, believing they know how they appear. It's not always easy — sometimes it seems like it won't happen — but when that moment arrives, I always recognize it.
My studio images, taken over time with different people, different stories and situations, are bound together by those instants of encounter, of suspension, when usually all it takes is to shoot.
This space, the portrait room, is for me a place of beauty and possibility. And precisely because the possibilities are many, and renew themselves each time, I like to come back often. After all this time, thanks to all these encounters, it's still the place where I want to be.
